The Insecure Writer and Jumping Back Into the Saddle Again

Today is August's contribution to Alex Cavanaugh's Insecure Writers Support Group.

Why am I an Insecure Writer this month?

Because I worry that after being away from writing for so long, I may never feel the urge to jump back into it again.

Okay, perhaps I’m being a bit melodramatic. There’s no way I’m ever giving up on writing, but it’s been so long since I’ve had the time to sit down and write, I wonder how hard it will be to start up again once my schedule finally settles down.

This has easily been the most unproductive summer of writing I’ve ever experienced. Work has been crazy and home projects have eaten up all my spare time. Throw in graduation parties, a bevy of sick cats, a road trip to Missouri to visit family, a trip out to the west coast for my niece’s wedding, and... you get the picture. I haven’t touched my WIP in a couple of months and my blog posting has been sporadic at best.

I know many of you have even busier schedules, so I’m not complaining. Life gets in the way sometimes, and my schedule should definitely be easing up starting next week, but I’ve never gone more than a few days without writing before, so I’m approaching uncharted waters.

By the way, I’ll be hiking on Wednesday, so I may not be able to respond to your comments and or visit your websites for a couple of days. In the meantime, can any of you guess where I am?

Not enough for you? How about this?

Still not enough? Okay, Here's one last hint!

Have a great IWSG Wednesday!

  1. You are somewhere in Arizona would be my guess.

It's been months since I wrote anything, so I'm in the same boat as you.

  2. What is it about this summer that makes it so hard to write?

Your guess is close, but the state is wrong.

  3. Enjoy the hike! I haven't been writing lately either and have the same worries. I'm not sure if I'll be able to get going again until the kids are back in school. But it's been nice accomplishing some big projects around the house and yard.

  4. You're outside.
That's why I took time off last month. It was the only way I was going to get anything written.

  5. Zion?

I totally understand not having time. Thankfully, I haven't had many demands on mine lately, which has been a blessing. Weekends are full, but I'm still getting to work every day, which means I still get my lunch hour to get some writing in.

Don't worry, you'll jump back into the swing of things, and you'll probably experience a renewed vigor for writing once you get started again since your creativity had the chance to recharge.

    1. Zion is correct. We hiked up the river for a couple of hours, then plodded out way back and collasped into the car.

  6. Zion National Park? If so, I'm jealous!

I totally relate to your post. I really thought I was done with writing around this time last year. But I ended up back to it and I have a feeling you will too.

  7. Ken, you just described all the reasons why I waited for my kids to fly the nest before becoming serious about writing: There just wasn't time! Keep at it. Time passes faster than you think.

  8. I recognize Zion, and I'd trade places with you. A getaway would be most welcome right now. Life keeps getting in the way of a lot of things I'd like to be doing, but then, guess what? That's life. Enjoy your hike. Bring back a refreshed mind.

    1. I thought someone probably would recognize it. The getaway is nice, but I really need to get back to work.

  10. I've no idea where it is, but that last picture looks like a giant frowning mouth.

An open space and great surroundings are really inspiring. Home projects, maybe not so much. Try not to get hung up on how long you've spent not writing or put pressure on - just relax and have fun. Look at it as treating yourself!

  11. Sick cats? That sounds awful. I'm sure your writing with get back on track when life settles out. Don't be too hard on yourself. It happens to everyone, really. In any case, good luck with the writing and happy August! :)

  12. I hope you enjoyed your hike. Getting back to writing after a long abstinence is hard. The best thing to do is open the file of what you've already written and read. You can't help but make changes, add words, etc. That will get you back in the saddle again. Good luck.

  13. I can so relate to what you're saying. I haven't written in about two months and I wonder when life will slow down. Some is fun like yours and others is stressful, too busy times. Hope you're having fun.

  14. It is hard to get back into the habit once you let yourself skip for whatever reason, even having no choice. Hope you find your grove again. Happy belated IWSG

  15. What awesome pictures! I hope you enjoyed your hike. I'm still trying to find my groove after a busy summer. I'm managing 1k words a day this week, and I think that's a good start. Good luck!
